Introducing Margie’s Moments of Tiyoweh

Ever since 2012 dawned on a beautiful wintery January 1st, I have been trying to figure out what I want to do with this space. I have, to quote Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, been feeling restless with this blog site as many of you have noticed. I’ve floated from one idea to another but none have really made me feel like I’m on the right path.

A few weeks ago I helped launch our agency blog, and my mission there is really clear. We’re covering things that are relevant to our clients. This site here has always had the word “musings” in the name and as a result, I’ve had no clear mission.

After six months of thought and a lot of agonizing, I finally figured out what I want to use this space for.

Tiyoweh

When I was in college, I was introduced to a Native American philosopher named Jamie Sams. Jamie’s heritage is Seneca and Cherokee (with a bit of French as well). With her grandmothers, she explored Native American history, culture, and storytelling. It was in her book, The 13 Original Clan Mothers, that I was introduced to the idea of Tiyoweh, or The Stillness. Jamie says, “This discipline is the Indian way of calming the mind and and sitting in the Stillness, to listen or receive.”

In the hustle and bustle of the online world, I thought it might be helpful for me, and for you, to have a moment where sort of sit still and think about things that are not about social media or marketing or the world at large.

How it will work

Every day, a post will go live at 7 AM EST. I figure this is morning for a lot of people and bedtime for folks who might be 12-14 hours ahead of me. If you want to receive the posts via email just subscribe over there in the upper right corner. I’ll try to keep the posts short – no more than 500 words, so it will just be a quick deep breath in the day for us to share.

And we’ll see how it goes.

If you still want to get marketing talk, I’ll be working on that at our Clayman Advertising blog. I also will continue to post as usual at Carol Roth’s site and at the Razoo Giving site. But here – this will be our little quiet place to talk about bigger yet smaller things than social media, branding, and marketing.

The first post will go live tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this journey with me!

Margie, love your willingness to follow your energy and change direction. It is also letting your true self out more and that is lovely.

Very cool Margie, I am way behind on all my writing. That stillness and place to be is important. That is something 12most taught me. We are people with multiple facets. I can write a post about music/entertainment and it doesn't mean that I know any less about my business. In fact, I think it humanizes us. Why can't a brand have a favorite band? Any way, I love your writing even if it was 1 word or 1500. Once you get to 2,000 you might have to give me a summary first.

susansilver Man, I don't think I have a 2000 word post in me, Susan, but I'll warn you first. I promise :)

Be Still and know I am Margie? I will start behaving tomorrow I promise - as long as I can sit still :)

CateTV Yep! Really it's an attack of the body snatchers, but I figure if I do it nice and quiet like, no one will notice :)

Excellent! Only one question, is it pronounced 'tee-o-weh' or 'tie-o-weh' (or something else entirely)? 8-)

margieclayman 897 pts moderator

AndreaDonahue I believe it's pronounced tee-oh-weh, but I can't find a source to back me up on that.

So, what does that mean? Will you be talking in a different voice? Will you wear your hair differently? Will I be able to recognize you?

I think you are kind of stuck with me now; I'll probably show up regardless of what you are doing..........

Good luck; hopefully it will get you to where you want to go.

margieclayman 897 pts moderator

bdorman264 You will no longer recognize me. My hair will be blue, my voice will sound a *bit* like ET, and I'll be 7'4.

About time you got some direction with your life! Geez! (just kidding) I will be waiting by my digital device at 6 a.m. Chicago time - no pressure LaBron...I mean Margie!

BTW do we need to re-subscribe?

margieclayman 897 pts moderator

kevjkirkpatrick I know, right? Took me long enough :)

You should not need to do anything. The site is staying here, just a different name at the top and different kinds of content coming through.

Congrats! My question is, if I'm already subscribed by RSS, will I continue to see your Tiyoweh posts there?
