Ever since 2012 dawned on a beautiful wintery January 1st, I have been trying to figure out what I want to do with this space. I have, to quote Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, been feeling restless with this blog site as many of you have noticed. I’ve floated from one idea to another but none have really made me feel like I’m on the right path.
A few weeks ago I helped launch our agency blog, and my mission there is really clear. We’re covering things that are relevant to our clients. This site here has always had the word “musings” in the name and as a result, I’ve had no clear mission.
After six months of thought and a lot of agonizing, I finally figured out what I want to use this space for.
Tiyoweh
When I was in college, I was introduced to a Native American philosopher named Jamie Sams. Jamie’s heritage is Seneca and Cherokee (with a bit of French as well). With her grandmothers, she explored Native American history, culture, and storytelling. It was in her book, The 13 Original Clan Mothers, that I was introduced to the idea of Tiyoweh, or The Stillness. Jamie says, “This discipline is the Indian way of calming the mind and and sitting in the Stillness, to listen or receive.”
In the hustle and bustle of the online world, I thought it might be helpful for me, and for you, to have a moment where sort of sit still and think about things that are not about social media or marketing or the world at large.
How it will work
Every day, a post will go live at 7 AM EST. I figure this is morning for a lot of people and bedtime for folks who might be 12-14 hours ahead of me. If you want to receive the posts via email just subscribe over there in the upper right corner. I’ll try to keep the posts short – no more than 500 words, so it will just be a quick deep breath in the day for us to share.
And we’ll see how it goes.
If you still want to get marketing talk, I’ll be working on that at our Clayman Advertising blog. I also will continue to post as usual at Carol Roth’s site and at the Razoo Giving site. But here – this will be our little quiet place to talk about bigger yet smaller things than social media, branding, and marketing.
The first post will go live tomorrow. I hope you enjoy this journey with me!
